Mayra makes waves againt cancer
I'm doing SAA my way, virtually from Cleveland Ohio, and planning to do a 10K swim the last weekend of August, 26 or 28 weather dependent in Lake Erie. Please join me to make waves against cancer!!
2020 UPDATE: Raising the bar and challenging myself to swim non-stop at least 4 miles/6.5km for a total of 10 miles/16 km relay paddle/swim! Hopefully, next Saturday August 29th.I'll be throwing stones before my swim with the name of many relatives of friends and family that are fighting or lost the battle against cancer, I'll be swimming in their honor and memory
2020: Cancer didn't stay in quarantine during the COVID-19. This was going to be my 5th year making waves againt cancer and swim in Memory of my brother Mauricio, who pased away in 2016 to Pancreatic Cancer, that same year I started supporting this amazing cause with the Inagural swimming event in St. Louis. Over these years I've also been swimming in honor of many other relatives, relatives of friends that are keep fighiting and in memory of those who sadly lost the battle. This year, I have the opporunity to keep making waves, virtually and raise money to support Cancer Research, and in spite of not getting together this year in St. Louis as a community, I will be swimming, biking and running on the Coast to Coast Challenge and I hope you join my team too! I'm also planning to swim 2.4 miles on August 29th, joine me that day whereever you are.
2019 Update: For my 4th year participating on this event, I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to swim this time, since on March 7th of this year I had ACL surgery on my right knee due to a ski accident early this year, and my doctor has me on swimming restrictions, however this won't stop me to raise money to suppor this cause and make waves against cancer. If doctors allow me, I will at least swim 0.5 miles, but if not I will swim 2.4 miles on Nov 2nd of 2019 during my 3rd full Ironman. All the effort and hard work I'm putting on my physical therapy, from now till swim day, is dedicated to my brother Mauricio, and all those relatives from friends that lost the batthle against cancer or that are still fighting!
2018: Since 2 years, each year, I've swim 2.4 miles / 3.8 KM at this event, to raise money for this great cause. With the support of many friends and family, I've been able to be a Top-Fundraiser #1 in the first year (2016 Inaugural event) and Top 5 in 2017. This is the only annual event, where I request support from friends and family. I won't stop reaching out for help to my network, BECAUSE, unfortunately CANCER keeps taking the life of many of our belovers, as it did to my Brother Mauricio 2 year ago, my aunty Lety, Debbie ha-CHA! the mom of a friend, the father of a friend, the friend of my brother, and the list keeps going! Besides, the all the people that won the battle, like my friend Sharon and many others that still fighting, or like Walter Denton, that keeps fighting and makes waves with his wife, Kathy Denton, the couple that brought Swim Across America to St. Louis.
The reaults of the first two editions of swim across america St. Louis, are real. Here you can find the research that Dr. Ron Bose, MD, PhD, who I personally met and talked to him, early this year, is conducting and that may lead to better therapies for some breast cancer patients
