Kimberly Carlisle

Olympian Kim Carlisle

As a freshman at Stanford University, Kimberly Carlisle was named to the 1980 U.S. Olympic Swimming Team, and then asked to weigh broader world issues against her personal goals when the U.S. led a boycott of those Games in Moscow to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. This experience still fuels her perspective: sport, art, photography, film, words and music are sacred bridges to greater understanding of self, other and community. We must walk them, and we must keep them safe.

Achievements: First woman under 2:00 in 200 yd backstroke, National Collegiate Champion, 1980 Olympian & Congressional Gold Medalist, Member 10 U.S. National swimming teams. Highest world ranking: 4th (1980, 100m back)
