Mel Stewart

Mel Stewart.jpg

Mel Stewart is a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist who participated at the 1992 Barcelona Games.  After finishing fifth in the 200m butterfly at the Olympics in Seoul in 1988, he returned to the Olympics again in 1992, this time winning the 200m butterfly in Olympic record time, as well as swimming the butterfly leg in the 4X100m medley relay.  He also won a Bronze medal as a member of the 800 freestyle relay.

Mel was known as the greatest 200m butterfly swimmer of his era, amassing 14 National titles in the event, a record that still stands in USA Swimming History.  Along with his three Olympic medals, Mel won two NCAA championships swimming for the University of Tennessee, and he also brought home titles in the 1991 World Championships, as well as titles in the 1987, 1989 and 1991 Pan Pacific Championships.

Based in Austin, Texas with his wife and daughter, Mel continues to be heavily involved in the sport.  He is currently an Ambassador to the United States Swimming Foundation.  Along with this role, he hosts his own show, “Gold Medal Minute” on Swimnetwork.com and is often seen at swim meets either commentating or interviewing swimmers.
