Walter Soza
In 1996, the last meet of his
swimming career, Walter competed in the Atlanta Olympics, representing his
native country of Nicaragua. Born and raised in Nicaragua, Walter has
represented his country in various national and international swim meets since
1978.
In 1985, his family moved to San
Antonio Texas. During his high school years, Walter swam for Alamo Area
Aquatics Association, under Coach Block. During his high-school years, he
earned a gold medal at the Junior Olympics Swim Meet, a silver medal during the
1992 Texas State Swimming Championships, All-American honors and a full
scholarship to TCU.
While at TCU, Walter was the sole
representative at the 94, 95, and 96 NCAA’s Championships earning him MVS honor
all four years. In 1993 Walter represented Nicaragua in the Central and
Caribbean Games winning Nicaragua’s only second Gold Medal of those games. The
same year, he earned Nicaragua’s title of “Athlete of the Year”. In 1994 He again took the honor of being the
Nicaragua’s sole representative at the 1994 World Swimming Championships in
Rome, Italy.
Walter has made Dallas his home
since 1999 and is currently living with his wife, Tammy Cline-Soza. Walter
joins SAA, making the Dallas Inaugural Event his first. Walter is passionate
about swimming and is happy to join SAA’s compassionate cause. He swims to
honor family and friends who have struggle with cancer and to those who have
sadly been taken by it.
