WHAT: Melissa Taylor, Founding Fish and Owner of Small Fish Big Fish, started swimming when she was only five years old. She fell in love with swimming, the way that it literally took the weight of the world off your shoulders. This love led her to want help others fall in love with the water, the same way she did. In 2009 Melissa and her husband incorporated Small Fish Big Fish. Their journey began small, going backyard-to-backyard teaching one little swimmer at a time. Eventually she gained such an amazing reputation that she was able to lease and build the swim school of her dreams in 2012. During this time Melissa discovered something that would change her life forever, a lump in her breast. She was diagnosed with Stage 2-3 breast cancer in 2013, and went on to go through five surgeries, six months of chemotherapy and 37 radiation treatments. Melissa always kept a positive attitude, she said, “no matter how bad my day was I knew that there is always someone out there that had it worse.” She gained her strength from her family, and the enormous support she received from the swim industry nationwide. After successfully beating cancer Melissa wanted nothing more than to give back, and help others who are affected by this disease. This is the story behind why Small Fish Big Fish is partnering with Swim Across America, to help make a difference, to help find a cure. Please join us in making Melissa’s dream of giving back come true.
