Join the 14th annual SAA - San Francisco Bay Area Swim. We meet at Little Marina Green in the City, travel via the wheeled "Cable Car" fleet to Pier 3, and board The California Spirit for a cruise towards Alcatraz ending just under the Golden Gate Bridge. ABOUT

We are thrilled to present the 14th Annual Swim Across America - San Francisco Bay Area Swim. Proceeds from the swim will support cancer research and patient recovery at our two local beneficiary programs: UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco Survivors of Childhood Cancer Program. In 2018, thanks to the generosity of our participants, SAA - SF Bay Area gifted $650,000 to these programs.

On September 28th, we meet at Little Marina Green in the City, travel via the wheeled "Cable Car" fleet to Pier 3, and board The California Spirit for a cruise towards Alcatraz ending just under the Golden Gate Bridge. Once there, swimmers will jump into the Bay and, surrounded by a large fleet of safety boats and kayaks, swim 1.75 miles (we have a .75 option) to Yacht Harbor Beach. Festivities follow at Little Marina Green.

All swimmers should be comfortable swimming in open water in the San Francisco Bay by the September 28th date. We will have training sessions available at Aquatic Park and elsewhere, and recommend that swimmers take advantage of them. Swimmers will be required to wear wetsuits unless given approval by our Safety Co-Director to swim without one.

All swimmers must raise a minimum of $750 to support the cause. Those who feel particularly motivated to raise even more, can register as WaveMaker Swimmers which is a commitment to raise a minimum of $1500. We welcome you increase your fundraising efforts to help us "Make Waves to Fight Cancer!

Swim Across America, Inc. (“SAA”) is a nonprofit corporation recognized by the IRS with federal tax-exempt status as a public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (Tax ID #22-3248256)

EVENT DETAILS
SWIMMER REQUIREMENTS

General Fundraising Requirement:

All swimmers are required to raise at least $750* by the event day in order to swim.

Remember, this is a fundraising event, and we ask all of our swimmers to put forth a concerted effort to raise money for cancer research. Most swimmers find that it is surprisingly easy to raise money, especially those swimmers who use the website we provide to update their personal page and send emails.

*Swimmers who are 16 years of age or under on September 28 are required to raise a minimum of $500.

Be a WaveMaker Swimmer:

WaveMakers are elite SAA fundraisers. All swimmers must raise at least $750, but WaveMakers (WM) go above and beyond the call of duty by pledging to raise at least $1,500. You can sign up to be a WaveMaker when you register but, even if you don't, you will automatically become one when you hit the $1,500 mark. WaveMakers get exclusive WM swag and access to the WM village on event day where they will have access to other perks.

Swim as an Individual, or on a Team:

A person may elect to swim alone, or be part of a team. Many colleagues and college alumni will form teams, or teams may be formed in honor or memory of a loved one. Being a member of a team can be motivating, inspirational and rewarding for everyone involved with Swim Across America. There is a friendly competition among all the teams, which makes it even that much more fun and challenging. All individual team members are still required to meet the individual fundraising minimum of $750.

Parking is limited at Little Marina Green, so carpooling, cycling, taxi, Uber, etc. is recommended for all but kayakers. Everyone but the kayakers should park at Crissy Field, just to the west of Yacht Road or on city streets.

Distance Options:

  • .75 Mile
  • 1.75 Mile

Registration Fees:

There is a registration fee that will be credited towards each swimmer's fundraising minimum after registering. The registration fee will change as follows:

  • Register before June 1st with a registration fee of $75
  • Register between June 1st and June 30th with a registration fee of $100
  • Register between July 1st and July 31st with a registration fee of $125
  • Register on or after August 1st with a registration fee of $150

SAFETY

Swim Across America makes swimmer safety the most important component of all of our swimming events. All swimmers are required to follow specific procedures and every precaution is taken to ensure swimmer safety.

Our Safety Director, Anthony DuComb, is responsible for coordinating all activities within the event, and works closely with both the SF Police and U.S. Coast Guard to ensure swimmer safety. We will have the SF Police Department out on the course with us, as well as many safety kayakers and zodiacs to ensure swimmer safety at all times. All boats are able to communicate via both hand held and ship to shore radios. All swimmers are required to follow extremely important and very specific procedures to participate in the event.

These procedures are designed to protect swimmers from injury and will be enforced by the Safety Director and all authorities affiliated with the event. Swimmers are expected to be competent swimmers and able to swim in extremely cold water comfortably. All swimmers are encouraged to wear wetsuits for this event as the water temperature in the Bay is extremely cold. This event is not appropriate for inexperienced or novice swimmers.
